Open access (OA) has become an established part of the research ecosystem. As OA has scaled, diversified and become embedded in scholarly communications, an important question remains: do the advantages associated with gold open access still persist, or has the growth of OA led to a normalisation of outcomes?

The new analysis also looks at engagement in low- and lower-middle-income countries, and the acceleration of the dissemination of research.

Jess Monaghan
Director of Policy and Performance, Open Access (OA)
Jess Monaghan is the Director of Policy and Performance, Open Access (OA), at Springer Nature, where she has worked for over a decade. After completing an AHRC-funded PhD in History at the University of Exeter, she moved from academia to scholarly publishing, joining the Open Research team at Macmillan Publishing in 2014 (now part of Springer Nature). In her current role, Jess leads Springer Nature’s global OA policy development across journals and books. She specialises in shaping strategic responses, developing commercial initiatives, and delivering insights that support transformative publishing models and sustainable OA growth.
David Stuart
Informational Professional-Stuart Information Research
David Stuart is an independent information professional and a bibliometrics officer at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He has previously worked as a Research Fellow in the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College London and in the Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group at the University of Wolverhampton, where he completed his PhD in webometrics.
