Global pathogen and virus outbreaks transcend borders, demanding coordinated efforts for detection, prevention, and response, which requires standardized data collection and interoperability across various regions. Sharing detailed surveillance protocols is crucial for effective global health management.
Join us in this one-hour webinar to explore how global networks are rapidly sharing surveillance protocols in an open science manner. Dr. Ruth Timme, a leading expert in dynamic protocol sharing, will discuss the benefits of the protocols.io platform for public health laboratories, drawing on her experience and insights from her leadership of the GenomeTrakr Program at the FDA.
In this session, we will cover:
-
Enhancing collaboration, sharing, and reproducibility
-
Community calls for better sharing of pathogen surveillance protocols
-
Case study: adapting Ebola protocol to SARS-CoV-2 sequencing
-
GenomeTrakr and protocol dissemination: role in foodborne pathogen surveillance and seamless protocol sharing
-
Pandemic response: rapid deployment of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance protocols
-
Beyond protocols: sharing meeting minutes, organizing hackathons, and much more

Ruth E. Timme, Ph.d.
GenomeTrakr Program Lead, Human Foods Program
U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Dr. Ruth Timme leads the FDA's GenomeTrakr Program, the agency's foodborne pathogen surveillance program. She earned her PhD in Plant Biology from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006. Over the past 13 years at the FDA, Dr. Timme has focused on validating genomic methods for public health applications and establishing national and global standards for pathogen genomic surveillance, facilitating the interoperability of data collected worldwide.
